Regional radon threshold changes: what they mean
Radon guidelines vary by country and region. To better match local recommendations, Airthings uses regional default radon thresholds. If your region’s defaults change, you may see updated Good, Fair, and Poor ranges in the app, even though your measured radon levels stay the same.
What is changing?
Regional radon defaults update the threshold values used to interpret radon readings. This can affect:
The Good/Fair/Poor ranges shown in the app
The colors shown in the app (because the thresholds changed)
How some parts of the experience describe whether a level is “good” or “poor” (based on the new defaults)
Your radon readings do not change. Only the thresholds used to categorize them change.
Default radon thresholds by country/region
The table below shows the current default Fair and Poor thresholds used by region and country.
Country | Region | Unit | Fair threshold (Bq/m³) | Fair threshold (pCi/L) | Poor threshold (Bq/m³) | Poor threshold (pCi/L) |
United States | North America | pCi/L | 100 | 2.7 | 150 | 4.0 |
Canada | North America | Bq/m³ | 100 | 2.7 | 200 | 5.4 |
Norway | Europe | Bq/m³ | 100 | 2.7 | 200 | 5.4 |
Denmark | Europe | Bq/m³ | 100 | 2.7 | 200 | 5.4 |
Sweden | Europe | Bq/m³ | 100 | 2.7 | 200 | 5.4 |
Finland | Europe | Bq/m³ | 100 | 2.7 | 200 | 5.4 |
United Kingdom | Europe | Bq/m³ | 100 | 2.7 | 200 | 5.4 |
Ireland | Europe | Bq/m³ | 100 | 2.7 | 200 | 5.4 |
Italy | Europe | Bq/m³ | 100 | 2.7 | 200 | 5.4 |
Netherlands | Europe | Bq/m³ | 50 | 1.4 | 100 | 2.7 |
Rest of Europe | Europe | Bq/m³ | 150 | 4.1 | 300 | 8.1 |
Default | Default | Bq/m³ | 100 | 2.7 | 200 | 5.4 |
What if I set a custom radon threshold?
Custom thresholds override defaults for that sensor.
If you want to go back to the recommended regional thresholds, use Reset to default in the radon threshold settings in the app.
Radon Insights: important note
Radon Insights should always use the country default radon threshold. It should not be affected by any later custom radon threshold changes you make after custom thresholds are launched.
Troubleshooting: “My colors changed, but my readings didn’t”
That is expected when defaults change. Your radon level can be identical, but it may fall into a different category if the threshold ranges were updated.
If the app and device appear out of sync, allow time for the device/app to refresh after syncing (this can vary by connectivity type).
